Kathryn La Verne Scruggs, 86, a longtime resident of Jerome, ID, passed away to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 13, 2025, ending her slow decline in health over the past few years.
Kathy was born on September 13, 1938, to Richard Clayton and Freddie Lucille Bounds in Hosston, Louisiana. At a young age, Kathy and her family moved west to southern California. While in California, she met the love of her life, Jimmie Scruggs. Jim and Kathy were married on July 13, 1957 in Costa Mesa. Shortly after, the newlyweds moved to the Magic Valley, where they had two daughters. Jim bought Kathy a café in Hagerman, fittingly naming it Kathy’s Kafé.
After living in Hagerman for some time, Jim and Kathy moved and laid roots in Jerome. As a homemaker, Kathy enjoyed sewing, crocheting, canning, gardening, and cooking. She experienced great joy by offering her hot meals, sweet treats, jars of canned peaches, pears, and jams, and ripe garden harvests to others. Both Jim and Kathy took great pleasure in bird-watching in the back yard. Kathy made sure all the birds were taken care of with plenty of food, but none more than her favorite hummingbirds. Later in life, their beagle Hunter, was the center of her attention.
Kathy was a regular attender of the Bible Baptist Church and later, the Free Will Baptist Church in Jerome. Her family and friends are comforted by the fact that Kathy was an enthusiastic Christian; she rejoices in Heaven with loved ones that preceded her in death. Those include her parents; her husband of 57 years Jimmie; her daughter Janae Burrell; her brothers Travis, Charles “Charlie”, and Benjamin “Benny”; and her sisters Elaine and Linda Sue.
She leaves behind her daughter Denise (Tom) Wiseman of Buhl, Idaho; sister Terri (Bob) Brajcich of Clatskanie, Oregon; grandchildren Kevin (Jennifer) Burrell of Keller, Texas; Tyler (Tiffany) Bullock of Twin Falls, Idaho; Kyle Bullock of Twin Falls, Idaho; Keith (Amy) Burrell of Nampa, Idaho; Garrett Ward of Buhl, Idaho; and Paige (Evan) Hauser of Missoula, Montana; eight great-grandchildren; in addition to many sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews largely from Southern Idaho.
A graveside remembrance service will take place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 11:00 am at the Hagerman Cemetery in Hagerman, Idaho.
